The X-wing boasts extra lasers, torpedo launchers and magazines, a hyperdrive and shields. It therefore needs larger engines to move the additional mass. The ETA-2 is used almost exclusively by Jedi, who had the benefit of the Force both for defense and offense, while the X-wing was mostly flown by non-Force Sensitive beings.
